About the Student of the Month
Get to know Red Dawg's Student of the Month, Nikki Skidmore, with this Q&A!
Q: How long have you been practicing?
A: I have had a practice at Red Dawg for a year and two months and regular practice for almost two years.
Q: How many days/week do you practice?
A: I go to Red Dawg 5 or 6 days a week. When I can't make it in, I practice at home and I always bring my yoga mat with me when I travel.
Q: What brought you to yoga?
A: I've always had an interest in yoga and thought it would be something that I would like to do. At the age of 34, I made the commitment to myself to do yoga every day - even if it's just for 15 minutes. After I practiced with my app at home for 6 months, I knew I needed to find a studio to help me expand my practice.
Q: What's your favorite asana?
A: Currently is is Ustrasana (Camel). I used to dread it, I would contemplate skipping it when it was time. By the time you get to it in Hot 1, you are hot and exhausted. Now, I embrace it and when I get into it, I feel amazing!
Q: How has yoga changed your life?
A: It has changed my life immensely. Before I started practicing, I never had any sort of steady exercise. Since I've had a steady practice I have lost weight, built strength and muscle tone, I have more energy, my low back pain is gone, I don't get sick very much, I crave healthier foods, I sleep better, I have less anxiety and more patience, I truly just enjoy things more! Every day I am amazed at how wonderful yoga is!
Q: How does your body feel now compared to before yoga?
A: My body looks and feels great. Before I had no muscle tone and now I can actually see my abs! I've suffered from low back pain from an old injury for 20 years and it is non-existent.
Q: What's your favorite aspect of yoga?
A: I don't have a favorite because I enjoy all the aspects of yoga and how I am learning to incorporate it into all aspects of my life.
Q:What would you say to someone contemplating adding a yoga practice to their life?
A: Do it now, you won't regret it. Take a class, any class at Red Dawg and get started now!
Q: What are your non yoga hobbies and interests?
A: Read, write, sew, enjoy time with my daughter and husband, ride my bike.
Q: What's your favorite quote?
A: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King, Jr.
Congratulations and thank you, Nikki! Keep on being a beacon of the yogi spirit! See you on the mat! Namaste :)
